Found on USENETfrom the February 12, 1976 issue of *Rolling Stone*'Sixth Beatle' Mal Evans Killed in Los Angeles By Patrick Snyder and Dolores Ziebarth Los Angeles -- Malcolm "Mal" Evans, 40, who was road manager and bodyguard of the Beatles from 1963 until their breakup, was shot to death by police in his rented duplex at 8122 West 4th Street the night of January 4th. Earlier in the evening, Fran Hughes, 26, who was living with Evans, called John Hoernle, Evans's collaborator on a book about the Beatles. Hoernle said he found Evans despondent, crying, "really doped up and groggy." Evans told him, "Please make sure you and Joanne [Lenard, the assistant on the book project] finish the book." Then the two men went to an upstairs bedroom, where Evans picked up a 30.30 rifle which Hoernle said was unloaded. They scuffled over the rifle but Hoernle was unable to take it away. Hughes called the police, telling them, "My old man has a gun and has taken Valium and is totally screwed up." Four officers arrived shortly and two of them, "David D. Krempa, 30, and Robert E. Brannon, 27, went upstairs. According to the police report, Evans, upon seeing the policemen, pointed the rifle at them. Lt. Charles Higbie of the LAPD robbery and homicide division said, "Officers directed him to put down the rifle. He refused to put down the rifle. The officers then fired six shots, four of which struck Evans, killing him instantly. Evans's manuscript, tentatively titled *Living with the Beatles Legend*, was to have been delivered to Grosset and Dunlap January 12th for publication this year. Evans, who had produced part of Keith Moon's last solo album, had also contracted to produce a new group called Natural Gas, made up of Joey Molland (formerly of Badfinger), ex-Humble Pie Jerry Shirley, ex-Rare Bird David Kaffinetti and Mark Clake (formerly of Uriah Heep). The group has not signed with any label but was scheduled to record January 5th. Evans was described by friends as both a "fantastic person" and "very troubled man." He was separated from his wife Lilly, who reportedly had asked for a divorce shortly before Christmas. "If Brian Epstein was the fifth Beatle," Evans's lawyer John Mason said, "then Mal was the sixth." Evans's body was cremated in Los Angeles January 7th, with Harry Nilsson and other friends attending. The ashes were flown to England for final services. -- from the February 12, 1976 issue of *Rolling Stone*

The question is, was that REALLY what happened. Or, was Mal executed & then this story fed to the press Chris

Personally, I think it was contrived after he was murdered. It would be easy to put a toy gun in a dead man's hand.
They had to get rid of him. Maybe he was heavy into drugs and/or alcohol and they powers that be were afraid he'd "blow whistle". Criminals always have to elminiate the "loose cannons". Like Johnny and George. I'm sure the killers aren't thrilled that Mal's videos made it out to the general public! Maybe that was his death warrant.

maybe he made the mistake of blackmailing faul? Good observation. A billionaire who would begrudge an old friend's widow a few bucks for a scrap of paper is suspect in my book.

maybe he made the mistake of blackmailing faul? from: " The Beatles: Off the Record" by Keith Badman Mal Evans: "The first song I ever wrote that got published was 'Sgt. Pepper'. At the time, I was staying with Paul as his housekeeper. His previous housekeepers (the Kellys) had left for some reason." Mal Evans: "I stayed with him (Faul) for four months and he had a music room at the top of his house with his multi-coloured piano and we were up there a lot of the time. We wrote 'Sgt Pepper' and also another song on the album, 'Fixing A Hole'. When the album came out, I remember it very clealry, we were driving somewhere late at night. There was Paul, Neil Aspinall and myself and the driver in the car, and Paul turned round to me and said, 'Look Mal, do you mind if we don't put your name on the songs? You'll get your royalties and all that, because Lennon and McCartney are the biggest things in our lives. We are really a hot item and we don't wnat to make it Lennon-McCartney-Evans. So, would you mind? I didn't mind, because I was so in love with the group that it didn't matter to me. I knew myself what had happened." (when "Paul" read "Faul")

I don't think that either of them wrote Fixing a hole. I think it was left behind when Paul died. They might've taken it and polished it up, but I have a strong suspicion that song was written by JPM... Chris

I agree JPM wrote "Fixing a Hole". And it's not about fixing the roof at the farmhouse in Scotland!!! That BS was started by Faul.

I thought that Lennon had claimed authorship of "Fixing a Hole" in "Glass Onion"
('I told you about the fool on the hill/.../fixing a hole in the ocean/...')
Interesting that Evans claims it.

What really amazes me, maybe I'm getting senile, but I swear I have read two different versions of this song. One is Faul wrote it about fixing a hole in the roof of the farmhouse in Scotland. In fact, this was a trivia question on Macca4Ever and the person giving that answer won.
However, in an interview Faul said it had nothing to do with fixing a hole in the roof of his house in Scotland. Wouldn't you think you'd remember what inspired a particular song. Of course, that's the problem with lying....you forget what you said which time ;D

He claims to have been an investigator for 40 years (do the math) and that the Beatles investigation has been his life for some time now, to the extent of traveling to England and other countries in pursuit of the truth. Sir, how is it you only just now learn of the connection between Mal Evans and the Beatles and that your dad has one of his manuscripts? You're a fake...or the world's worst investigator. I vote for fake.

Imgonnaopenmymind has registered at the other forums. I, on the other hand, haven't.
I'm surprised that you people would suddenly turn on me. I thought this was an investigation forum, not a place where you have to watch your back.
I came here, as an exchange student from Yorkshire, with an interest in 60IF. Now, unfortunately, it seems that will have to end.
If you wish me to leave, I will. But don't try to contact me after I leave.
I made it clear in my emails to reg60if. I'm a foreign exchange student. What I didn't make clear was that it was an adult night school program.
And, also, is it a crime to share a love of a certain musical with someone I don't know? Is it a crime to live in a certain area where this person probably lives where their IPs are probably similar?
I'm disheartened by the distrust of a fellow enthusiast. I wouldn't like to leave, but if I have to, I will.
