Friends have told me vintage Hofners are notoriously difficult to keep in tune. Even with official tuners, roadies, etc on the sidelines a musician of JPM's calibre would most likely still check it before playing it. For me, this widens the gap between Bill and JPM as bassists. Bill has been quoted as saying he didn't know (care) which strings were used. Do these photos back up that sentiment? P.S. The third link seems to work only if copy and pasted. Any help re: posting images would be greatly appreciated. ;D

My point? Paul was a bassist and Bill was a piano player. I feel the photos, video etc. pre and post 1966 speak to this.

I meant the you can get Paul's relative dimensions by comparing him with the dimensions of the Hoffner bass. I don'tknow what the Hofner is, but that's easily found at a "Guitar Center" website or similar. |

He doesn't care which strings are used?! Thats a sign of something right there. Any self-respecting musician spends a good deal of time looking for their favorite brand of strings: for guitar, bass, violin... any string instrument. Some strings are too thick, too thin, too abraisive, too twangy, etc. Not to mention that with bass, especially the Hofner, Rickenbacker, and the lesser known Longhorn bass, there is the "flatwound"/"roundwound" dichotomy that seperates the men from the boys (usually in chronological order  ). Not caring which string he has means that he doesn't know what the #$&@ he's doing... or he is one cocky S.O.B. Or even both! I have idolized the image of JPM for a long time. It's what got me into playing/writing music in the first place. To hear him say something like that is almost heartbraking for me. -Note: If a musician has a favorite brand of something, and if the musician is popular (no problem here  ), they get that brand of strings/amps/cables/picks for free... ugh.. so confused. |

BTW, I'd galdly measure my Faufner, but I don't know how close it is to the real deal. I think the headstock is longer and the body seems less dumpy than the real thing.

Yes, Paul could actually play the bass. Bill generally plays the piano and he is often pretending to play the Hofner (which isn't really his is it?) And there are times he looks like the Hofner is going to bite him........I wish it would, or then again, maybe it has ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D  ;D ;D |

Not all musicians are picky about their strings. Like me, for one. I know a lot of musicians who go to the music store and buy whatever strings are on sale. I know you would think that once you get rich you would get picky but that's not necessarily the case. Some musicians just never get nitpicky about shit like that. Some just prefer heavy over light gauge, some don't care. Some only buy one gauge from one brand name, some don't care.
I've seen plenty of clips of Faul playing the bass and he does just fine. Any replacement plan where they would be going through so much plastic surgery, etc, they would of course have the new Paul learn to play bass. The fact that he now plays the piano more could amount to nothing more than his growth as a songwriter, as it's easier for some to plot out a song on an instrument where you can play the rhythym and melody at the same time.

Sure he had to learn to be a lefty but I often wondered if there was a way to restring the guitar to look leftie and really be rightie. I know Paul used to play his first guitar upside down until it dawned on him to re-string it!

As a quick side note . John Lennons RIC 325 is a TINY guitar ! It looks like a 3/4 size childs instrument .
That first Gretch George had wasn't as big as it looked .

I know Paul used to play his first guitar upside down until it dawned on him to re-string it! there's no way to restring a guitar that would "make it" righty... you could string it upside down, but playing that way would be the same as playing it upside down like you say he used to (I never heard of that, sounds retarded to me, who wouldn't know that you can restring a guitar?).... and if you did that, it would be totally obvious... anyone on here who plays guitar would be able to tell by looking at it... on the bass, like 90% of the notes are played on the E-string, that's the thickest, bassiest one that is closest to the top of the instrument when you are standing holding it... if Faul kept his bass strung for a righty and played it upside down, it would be really weird looking to anyone who knows, because his fingers would be on the string on the BOTTOM of the bass as opposed to the TOP of the bass for the majority of the time.... any replacement would simply have to learn to play left handed, that is obvious... |

When Paul first learned on an acoustic, he couldn't understand why it didn't sound right. At the time he was just a poor kid. Then he realized he was a leftie and played the guitar upside down to make it "fit" his lefthandedness. When he was teaching John, the had to do it "mirror Image" because of John's being right handed. John's mom had taught John banjo cords.
Because you are obvioulsy familiar with how an electric guitar or bass is strung you would know, but a person like me would have no idea! I had to ask a bass player about something becaue I didn't know myself. However, on 'Hello Good-bye" Bill just hits the strings occasionally and is up where the body and neck join. Paul usually played towards the hole area.

i think that you will find that in 99% of music videos (unless they use genuine live footage) there isn't always a correlation between exact correct playing and how they play it in the video.

The Hofner is a beast, I'm not sure they are of much use to anybody but JPM imitators... The fact that JPM played one tells me this...He liked a light,small bass and he was very dedicated. "Drive my Car" is damn hard to play on bass correctly and sing to at the same time. Hats off to Bill if he actually played it right.

If Bill could play a Hofner at all, it would be amazing.....he has had many years to try and learn but does seem to prefer the piano.
I didn't see Live8 but if he is using the Hofner more, he must have been reading our forum ;D ;D ;D
