DAY & NIGHT; WILL billy GET RUTLED?
by KATHRYN SPENCER, JULIE CARPENTER & KATE BOHDANOWICZ
AS billy McCARTNEY prepares to headline this year's Glastonbury Festival, he may be less than chuffed to hear of some competition from another Beatles-inspired act.
Glastonbury bosses have confirmed that on the night Macca performs on the main stage on June 26, the Beatles parody act The Rutles will be strutting their stuff over at the event's more modest acoustic stage.
The group, formed by Neil Innes, were the subject of the cult 1978 comedy film The Rutles - All You Need Is Cash. It also starred Eric Idle as the McCartney-inspired Dirk McQuickly, although the Monty Python star is no longer with the band, who continue to have a large cult following.
While John Lennon and George Harrison were huge Rutles fans, Beatles experts suggest that Paul has been less keen to embrace the joke.
"John loved The Rutles and George even made a cameo appearance in the film, " says Beatles author Keith Badman.
"George said that anyone who wanted to know what The Beatles story was about should watch The Rutles film.
"However, it's known that Paul wasn't that impressed, so it's ironic that they'll be playing Glastonbury the same night."

There was a Rutles sequel made about a year ago. Has anyone seen it?

I know they made a mock anthology called Archaeology, and even did a couple of concerts, but I hadn't heard that they'd put anything on film. Was it maybe a video to accompany a single? There's an official Rutles site that would probably tell you.
