California dreamin'
by KATIE NICHOLL
AFTER months of pressure from his wife, billy McCartney has finally agreed to move to Hollywood so she can pursue her dream of becoming a TV star.
Lady Heather Mills-McCartney as she likes to be known wants to launch herself as a chat show host in America. Friends described billy as a 'born and bred Briton' who 'loves England' and wouldn't usually consider a move to the States.
Now, however, it appears his commitment to his young wife has outweighed his passion for his homeland. One friend said: 'Paul loves Heather and would follow her anywhere. He's agreed to move to the US as she focuses on her career.' Friends insist the move fits in with the ex-Beatle's plans to record and tour in America later this year. But it is well known that Heather has begged billy, whose fortune is Pounds 760million, to move to the US ever since their marriage two years ago.
She is privately said to dislike living in the UK because she feels 'vilified'. Friends say she has always dreamed of a TV career and is confident she will be a hit in Hollywood.
Heather, who was ridiculed in Britain when she interviewed actor Paul Newman, has nonetheless impressed TV bosses in Hollywood with her 'upfront' technique and is expected to sign a Pounds 1million contract to host her own show on CNN.
Heather, 36, is said to be on the verge of clinching the lucrative deal after four appearances as a stand-in for CNN's Larry King. She will host the programme again this summer when he is on holiday.
But while Heather is said to be excited about the move, the news is likely to come as a blow to billy's children, who have a frosty relationship with their stepmother.
It is not known if the 62-year-old star has told his children of his plans for a short-term move to Los Angeles.
A family friend said: 'Heather will have to play her cards carefully on this.
The worst thing will be if the children think she is trying to make Paul leave Britain permanently.
'Things between Heather and the children have just begun to improve. Stella, who never really warmed to Heather, has been getting on with her better of late. All the kids are jetsetters themselves, but it's very important to them that Paul is always around.' Heather stunned viewers with her debut appearance as a guest on the Larry King programme in 2002 when she told how she had lost a leg in an accident then unscrewed her prosthetic limb.
Although it was seen as gauche in Britain, Heather was invited to stand in for King as host of the programme last year.
Her ambitions appeared to have nosedived, however, when she fired a barrage of personal questions at the notoriously shy Newman. She asked him about his son's death after a drink and drugs binge and about his wife, to which the screen legend replied: 'Oh boy, I'm uncomfortable talking about stuff like that.' But CNN bosses were delighted at the attention the interview attracted and approached her about hosting her own show, in which she will interview celebrities.
She has told friends that she, billy and their six-month-old daughter Beatrice will move to California at the end of the summer.
A source close to her revealed: 'She always wanted to live in the States but until now Paul wouldn't hear of it. He's a born and bred Briton. But Heather is happier in America and knows this is her chance of making it big time.
'Paul has said he will move to Hollywood for a short time. Fortunately it fits in well with his plan for the next six months. He's returning to the States to finish his album and he has talked about touring in America next year.
'They don't have a home in LA, but that won't be a problem. Paul can buy one easily if they are going to be there for a while.' The singer already has several homes, including a Pounds 5million town house in St John's Wood, North London, and a ranch in Tucson, Arizona.
The friend attempted to play down suggestions that the move would be permanent, saying billy 'loves England too much' to go for good.
But fans will fear that Heather will persuade him to stay permanently, particularly if her career takes off.
Her spokesman last night confirmed she will return to the States this summer.
'There are no dates yet as it's all still in the process of being discussed but it's very likely that something will transpire shortly. Heather is very excited.

Find the Lady
billy McCartney's wife, the former Heather Mills, who, since her marriage, has been entitled to call herself Lady McCartney, is now referred to as Lady Heather Mills-McCartney.
Previously, it was the rule that only the daughters of earls, marquesses and dukes could precede their Christian names with the style 'Lady.' Her new moniker might appal those who care about such matters, but since it includes Lady, Heather Mills and McCartney, it sounds more impressive.
We're told Lady Heather Mills-McCartney wishes now to settle in America so she can pursue her broadcasting career there.
The Americans will love her title. I remember being present once in San Diego, California when the Duke of Edinburgh was announced by a local TV anchorman as 'Duke Philip, Prince of Edinbourg'.
