"Movin' Out", for those who don't follow Broadway, is a currently running 2 hour musical on, well, where else, Broadway. Saw it last week. (On vacation) Loved it. It is a fusion of Twyla Tharp's brilliant modern dance plus a hpt 11 piece band featuring Michael Cavanugh on vocals. I hope my memory is right on his name. Anyway, it was a feast of a good rock ensemble, Billy Joel tunes, and 18 young and nimble modern dancers. Great lighting etc. Cavanaugh sings numerous Joel songs. He is perfect. How do his pipes hold up 8 performances a week? (He must have an understudy) A vocal double for Joel for sure. I suppose side b y side comparison would show the differences, but he has the vocals DOWN! He plays a bitchin' piano as well.
OK why can't they do the same thing with the Beatles music?Don't do Beatlemania (again), but go with another concept. The music is great enough to not require a bunch of Beatle doubles (what am I saying???!!!) ape-ing old Beatle footage---------no, no, no. They were perfect. Perfect. Why remake Gone with the Wind? It was perfect! But, instead, adapt the music with a ballet theme or something. Say what, that would be copying? Like they don't already commit artistic incest on the Great White Way? PPPahh--leazzze. It could be a GREAT show. If handled expertly. Maybe Twyla would give it a go. I have to go out out now and fill out my Billy Joel CD collection. All this old stuff (Beatles, Joel, Mamas amd the Papas, Janice, Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears) still has life in it.
