i thought that maybe doctor robert could be paul's doctor for his IBS.
Doctor Robert Lyrics:
Ring my friend, I said you call doctor robert Day or night he’ll be there any time at all, doctor robert Doctor robert, you’re a new and better man, He helps you to understand He does everything he can, doctor robert
If you’re down he’ll pick you up, doctor robert Take a drink from his special cup, doctor robert Doctor robert, he’s a man you must believe, Helping everyone in need No one can succeed like doctor robert
Well, well, well, you’re feeling fine Well, well, well, he’ll make you ... doctor robert
My friend works for the national health, doctor robert Don’t pay money just to see yourself with doctor robert Doctor robert, you’re a new and better man, He helps you to understand He does everything he can, doctor robert
Well, well, well, you’re feeling fine Well, well, well, he’ll make you ... doctor robert

I don't see any reason to doubt the offical interpretation -- Dr. Robert was a prescription pill-pusher to the stars in Manhattan.

I heard some where that (and I can't confirm this) the song's based on a doctor friend one of them knew, or something along those lines.
It's a great song..and this is all that matters! ;D

I seem to remember that this was John's dentist who introduced him and George to LSD. There is an alternate story that Bob Dylan slipped it into their drinks at a dinner party. Doctor Robert was a real friend of John Lennon's. Him and John can be heard reciting lines from King Lear during the end sequence of I Am The Walrus (lines pertaining to someone's "untimely death").

I've heard the John and Doctor Robert story on a couple of Beatles sites. I don't think it's a radio production, because one of the voices clearly sounds like John to me.
