Paul accidently slips during a press conference that John was married. Could it have been enough to piss someone off?

Maybe. It would have pissed me off if I was a hormone driven teenaged girl back then. (They did announce it though on Ed Sullivan...so I don't see how Paul's affirmation would be threatening.) But, seriously though, I don't see how that would be enough to make a person go on the rampage, unless you are psychotic or just sanguineous. Or an idiot.

Lucy, I think there's something else he might've said in a late 64 interview that might make someone try to kill him but it hasn't really been researched yet. But we know the words "I said something wrong...".

There are about 10 "late 1964" interviews there.

at least twice, paul strongly UNendorses Goldwater(R) calls him an extremist. Those boys don't like that kinda talk at elections.
John & Paul also make some thinly veiled gay innuendo.

The establishment was fully lined up behind LBJ. Saying they didn't like Goldwater is neither here nor there.
