In my efforts, such as they are, to establish links between the Beatles and other music labels, I stumbled upon a small label that was actually owned by RCA Italy. The label was called "HELP!" records and appeared to be set up to cash in on "Beatlemania."http://www.italianprog.com/l_rcasubs.htm
From the site:
"HELP
A very small label that released two albums that are very important in the Italian progressive scene, Quella Vecchia Locanda and Procession's debut LP's.
Along with these, a lot of foreign productions, especially from Germany and Austria, among which the LP's from Free Action Inc. and The Sub, that produced with In concert, a much sought after album.
Label was black with a red/white cartoon-type logo."
In "HELP!" 's stable of artists there is a German group called the Rattles that, not surprisingly, started as a skiffle band and was playing Hamburg, apparently in direct competition with the Beatles during the early sixties. I was ready to discount it as another "rip-off" group until I read some of their lyrics.
The Rattles
Money Making Machine - Lyrics
Woke up in the morning
fell out of bed
recall me what I'm dreaming
makes me sad
my face looks like a switchboard
operator takes my hand
he turns it till my eyes do flash
that's never the end.
It's like a bad dream
bein' a money making machine.
My legs as long as pipelines
miles away my feet.
My muscles don't obey my head
don't know how to treat
people try to milk my breast
produces a stream of money honey everything
they like to have in their dream.
It's like a bad dream
bein' a money making machine.
I will try to investigate them more although most everything written about them is in German. Is there anyone aboard that can translate? They probably knew the members of the Beatles and they were signed by RCA Italy, which was apparently woo-ing JPM as a solo artist. Perhaps their lyrics contain clues to what was going on at the time.
Edit to add: They reformed in 1973 and renamed themselves "Randy Pie & Family" . They recorded two singles for Polydor and then quit. Randy Pie went on with the original drummer and other musicians.
