Well I hate to spoil the party, but I believe that the hand signals and flag signals are different in semaphore. The hand signals look more like the actual letters. Maybe someone who's more well versed in this can comment.

It was James Paul unless they have changed it. But it was the true James Paul.
As Perplexed said Paul was a nudge. If something made him unhappy, he would complain, bitch, whine constantly about it. He did that about his wanting to leave the Beatles. His constant complaining alerted everyone to what Paul wanted to do. Had he shut up and just made his plans, he might be alive today. He was a VERY sqeaky wheel and a loose cannon, so .........

Does anyone know if that's James Paul on Help? or Faul? His face is nearly covered up on the cover. That's the point. No Billy yet. Bill entered on October 1966. Around "Help!" time Paul developed a "female" look.... and re-acquired a "male" look starting with the second quarter of 1966. Maybe too much looking at his fur. Hormone assumpition to compensate the loss....?

Sorry Byrds I can't see none.... there Well, John looks like the "w" character when just hand signs being used, but it seems to me the poses of the Beatles are just supposed to resemble semaphor, but they're not the actual letters. So, in other words, I don't think the Beatles are actually spelling anything. But what do I know? If they were holding flags, then, yes, "NUJ", but that seems to be meaningless.

The 12 year old complained that Paul looked like a girl! He may have been more right about that than he ever knew. I've still never seen HELP, so I can't judge.

Yes, I mis-spoke. I meant that Paul's facial structure reminds me a little bit of Scott Baio's--at least, in those pictures. Also, some Irish are very fair, with blood showing in the cheeks; some have a darker complexion, almost swarthy. My uncles and aunts on my mother' side are 2nd and 3rd generation from Ireland. They were 3 siblings--2 had a deep olive type of complexion with black hair. They got the question frequently-- "were they Mediterannean." No, just "black Irish", they'd say. So, yes, I know Scott is Italian, I know macca's mom was Irish, Mary Mohin, so, just saying that from photo to photo, his complexion seems to range from pale to deeper.
Let me say I realize now that I didn't take into account lighting issues, film, make-up, etc.

I agree. It was edited to look like a shirt but originally it was his "willie". Besides, there is a slight coloration difference. The whole scene seems to be a slam on Paul.....Paul would not let his willie be wagging about. We sure never saw it on any other Beatle film. And if we are totally honest, EVERYTHING about Bill was larger than Paul. There are pictures were you can basically get the idea and Bill's was bigger, but what a crude way to behave. Would any of you guys out there go around displaying yourselves? I doubit it because, though we may have our disagreements, you are gentlemen.
