This one comes from their third LP "Lizard." The following song is about the Beatles. The Beatles are also part of the cover artwork for this album as well. It seems interesting to me that King Crimson decided to make a reference to the Beatles on their third album. (3 Beatles, third King Crimson LP...very strange.)
The names are:
Judas = Paul
Rufus = Ringo
Silas = George
Jonah = John
"Happy Family"
(Fripp/Sinfield)
Happy family, one hand clap, four went by and none come back.
Brother Judas, ash and sack, swallowed aphrodisiac.
Rufus, Silas, Jonah too sang, "We'll blow our own canoes,"
Poked a finger in the zoo, punctured all the ballyhoo
Whipped the world and beat the clock, wound up with their share of stock.
Silver Rolls from golden rock, shaken by a knock, knock, knock.
Happy family, wave that grin, what goes round must surely spin;
Cheesecake, mousetrap, Grip-Pipe-Thynne cried out, "We're not Rin Tin Tin."
Uncle Rufus grew his nose, threw away his circus clothes
Cousin Silas grew a beard, drew another flask of weird
Nasty Jonah grew a wife, Judas drew his pruning knife.
Happy family one hand clap, four went on but none came back
Happy family, pale applause, each to his revolving doors.
Silas searching, Rufus neat, Jonah caustic, Jude so sweet.
Let their sergeant mirror spin if we lose the barbers win;
Happy family one hand clap, four went on but none came back
The breakdown:
Happy Family
Happy family, one hand clap, four went by and none come back.
(The Beatles were tight, like brothers. One hand clapping doesn't make a sound. The dead don't make sounds. There were four Beatles but that time has passed. There is no going back.)
Brother Judas, ash and sack, swallowed aphrodisiac.
(Faul's admitting to using LSD.)
Rufus, Silas, Jonah too sang, "We'll blow our own canoes,"
(Ringo, George and John didn't want everyone to know about their LSD use.)
Poked a finger in the zoo, punctured all the ballyhoo
(Faul's remarks put an end to the fun that everyone (ie the London rock establishment) was having with LSD)
Whipped the world and beat the clock, wound up with their share of stock.
(The original line-up made the money and Faul ended up with a share of their stock.)
Silver Rolls from golden rock, shaken by a knock, knock, knock.
(Although the Beatles have material goods, all of that is an illusion that is shattered when the group is notified about the death of Paul, hence, "knock, knock, knock.")
Happy family, wave that grin, what goes round must surely spin;
(The Beatles have to act like everything is fine and normal. The rumours that go around have to be spun by PR people so the truth isn't revealed.)
Cheesecake, mousetrap, Grip-Pipe-Thynne cried out, "We're not Rin Tin Tin."
(The Beatles and Faul state that they are the Beatles.)
Uncle Rufus grew his nose, threw away his circus clothes
(Ringo was replaced for safety.)
Cousin Silas grew a beard, drew another flask of weird
(George wanted to be such a fringe character than no one would bother with him.)
Nasty Jonah grew a wife, Judas drew his pruning knife.
(John, who wasn't taking the cover-up well, gets a handler by the name of Yoko Ono. Faul breaks up with Paul's fiance Jane Asher.)
Happy family one hand clap, four went on but none came back
(Beatles were like family. Death. No going back to the original four.)
Happy family, pale applause, each to his revolving doors.
(After the death of Paul the positive reception of Sgt Pepper was lost on the Beatles because they were in mourning. The three wanted out.)
Silas searching, Rufus neat, Jonah caustic, Jude so sweet.
(George used his eastern religion kick to cover up his search for Paul's killers. Ringo stayed quiet--he didn't want any trouble coming to Maureen or his sons. John got angry and temperamental because he had to live a lie. Faul put on his happy public face to charm the public.)
Let their sergeant mirror spin if we lose the barbers win;
(The Sgt. Pepper drum clue and the new haircuts/mustaches that went along with the album. It seems to say that if people don't believe PID then the forces that did the make over on the Beatles to hide the replacement of Paul win.)
Happy family one hand clap, four went on but none came back
(Same meaning as before.)
It seems to me that there are a lot of clues about PID in this song that is supposed to be about the break-up of the Beatles. Then again, the Beatles broke up because PID.
