Then there's always Alladinsane...I've been thinking about the lyrics on this one all day.
Here's the track list:
Watch That Man (4:25)
Aladdin Sane (1913-1938-197?) (5:06)
Drive In Saturday (4:29)
Panic In Detroit (4:25)
Cracked Actor (2:56)
Time (5:09)
The Prettiest Star (3:26)
Let's Spend The Night Together (3:03)
The Jean Genie (4:02)
Lady Grinning Soul (3:46)
I find the dates after the title Aladdin Sane pretty interesting, especially how it ends in 197?. I wonder what they mean. Of course the title breaks down to,
A lad insane. There's also a Rolling Stones cover.
Check out the lyrics to the first song:
Watch That ManShakey threw a party that lasted all night
Everybody drank a lot of something nice
There was an old fashioned band of married men
Looking up to me for encouragement - it was so-so
The ladies looked bad but the music was sad
No one took their eyes off Lorraine
She shimmered and she strolled like a Chicago moll
Her feathers looked better and better - it was so-so
Yea! it was time to unfreeze
When the Reverend Alabaster danced on his knees
Slam! so it wasn't a game
Cracking all the mirrors in shame
CHORUS
Watch that man! Oh honey, watch that man
He talks like a jerk but he could eat you with a fork and spoon
Watch that man! Oh honey, watch that man
He walks like a jerk
But he's only taking care of the room
Must be in tune
A Benny Goodman fan painted holes in his hands
So Shakey hung him up to dry
The pundits were hoking the manholes were smoking
And every bottle battled with the reason why
CHORUS
Watch that man (repeat ad inf.)
The beginning mentions a party that lasts all night, thrown by the mysterious "Shakey". I believe this is David Bowie talking about Faul acting like a jerk, pretending to be someone he's not.
Some girl was telling him about the clues on the l.p.'s. Who could the lemon in a bag be? Obviously this shook David up enough to start looking for clues himself!
The song
Time has some intersting bits:
Time - He's waiting in the wings
He speaks of senseless things
His script is you and me boys
Time - He flexes like a whore
Falls wanking to the floor
His trick is you and me, boy
Time - In Quaaludes and red wine
Demanding Billy Dolls
And other friends of mine
Take your time
The sniper in the brain, regurgitating drain
Incestuous and vain, and many other last names
I look at my watch it say 9:25 and I think "Oh God I'm still alive"
We should be on by now
We should be on by now
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la (repeat)
You - are not a victim
You - just scream with boredom
You - are not evicting time
Chimes - Goddamn, you're looking old
You'll freeze and catch a cold
'Cause you've left your coat behind
Take your time
Breaking up is hard, but keeping dark is hateful
I had so many dreams, I had so many breakthroughs
But you, my love, were kind, but love has left you dreamless
The door to dreams was closed. Your park was real dreamless
Perhaps you're smiling now, smiling through this darkness
But all I had to give was the guilt for dreaming
We should be on by now (x5)
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la (repeat)
Yeah, time!
Billy Dolls!!!!! Can you believe it!? Man, this song lais it all out for ya plain as day!
This was the last album of original tunes for the Spiders From Mars...still the Ziggy years, before he commited Rock n' Roll suicide!1973.
