Before I knew about Faul, my thoughts use to be that "Paul's" drug-taking initially enhanced him creatively (eg: Sgt. Pepper) but then later burnt him out creatively, as drug use tends to kill brain cells and probably causes emotional scars as well. Seemed reasonably logical thoughts at the time, but now, knowing what I know...

Sorry People, but I do not agree on this discussion about Paul's songwriting after 1966 and the Beatles. I specially dissagree with TheeCavendeshLane's post.
Ok, tastes differ, and you can have endless discussions about what you don't like and why (it's sometimes more fun to talk about what you both DO like), but hey, may I point out that McCartney's "Flower In The Dirt" album (89) contains bloody good songwriting. Whether you like this genre or not, there are few pop writers who can level up to songs like "My Brave Face", "We Got Married", "You Want Her Too" (and many others). Of course you could keep on bashing Paul here, and state that these songs measure up to standard because of the collaboration with Elvis Costello, but that seems hardly fair. BTW: Declan McManus = really Elvis. Elvis = Dead. Paul wrote with Elvis for this album, both dead? Another clue? Flowers In The Dirt. Mmmm, you put flowers on a grave, then they become dirty. Are these flowers on Pauls grave? Yet another clue?
Keep diggin' folks!

???jae i'm incredulous like you about the song backlog theory. according to it, the faulpaul songs released on "let it be" and "abbey road" would've been written by paul back in '65 or '66, before he supposedly died! but those songs show a clear evolution from the earlier songs! i know it's only 3.5 years, but 1966 to 1969 makes a BIG DIFFERENCE in pop music history! those were revolutionary times in rock 'n roll. OK ! I may be convinced Paul is dead thanks to your post ! And for that I thank you . You are right . Paul wrote progressively better and better material from 64-66. Allow your mind to consider all that wonderful music from "Rocky Raccon" to" She's leaving Home" and to" Blackbirds" Then consider Uncle Albert Ebony Ivory Say,Say , Say

Some of his earlier pre-1966 material isn't always that great either, think of his first song ever written, "I Lost My Little Girl", (he performed it again on the MTV unplugged CD). And even "Love Me do" is a pretty mediocre song.
What about "Get Back", "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" just to name a few from his pre-solo period?

So do I, dear Eggman, so do I. (at least one thing we agree on) (There is no Faul really, as a matter of fact it's all Paul)

I get the sudden urge of quoting a piece of this famous dialog: "- Look, an argument isn't just saying 'no it isn't' " "-yes it is!" "-no it isn't!" "-yes it is!" "-no it isn't" (etceatera ad infinitum)

Firstly, let me laugh my ass off here...."Ebony and Ivory" Oh Gawd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not even worthy of K-mart shopping muzak.
OK, kiddies, the lucid dialogue about paul/faul songsmithing is excellent. But, from a CREATIVE GENIUS point of view, it's all a moot point. James Paul wrote 'Ealinor Rigby' which is sheer, pure genius and arguably his best serious song ever.....much deeper and heavier than 'Yesterday.' SO, if Paul could exponentially hypershift from 'Another Girl' circa HELP! soundtrack to 'Ealinor', then.......
He for sure could have composed the output in the 1966 time frame that was drawn from for Faul tunes. 'Ealinor' was Paul's 'Strawberry Fields', if you like. Sheer genius which transcends all. CASE CLOSED! World Peace Now... -Ian
