True story. In Dec 1966 the band I was in was playing the Blue Gardenia Brighton Sussex. I guy dressed in well pressed blue denim approached me and offered us a high profile gig at Saltdean Lido on new years eve. That would be my 21st birthday so we jumped at it. He asked us to do him one big favor. Try out a singer for him prior to the show. Sure enough, on the night there the singer was introduced by the denim man. I was assured he wasnt wanting to join the band merely it was some kind of jam and an opinion has to how it went. The guy was scruffily dressed, unshaven and looked vaguely familiar with a Scouse accent. Half way thru the rehearsal I noticed he had a gold identity bracelet on his wrist with the name McCartney on it. He played an acoustic guitar wore a sheepskin jacket and the songs although I cant be certain sounded like they were from the first Paul McCartney solo album which came much later. We politely said he was great although I must admit now it did not make of an impact on me. The gig went great and it was a memorable 21st. As the days weeks months and years went by I began to think more about this strange episode. The odd thing not long after Paul McCartney bought a farm in Rye Sussex not more than 15-20 miles from Saltdean. He often records in Brighton and I believe he now has a beach front property at Hove Lagoon right next door to Saltdean where my brother actually saw him in a Range Rover a couple of weeks ago. Crazy story hey! Well this is the first time I have shared it publicly
