Recently picked up an excellent new book by Larry Kane, which is his chronicle of the Beatles 1964 and 1965 North American tours.
Kane was the only American journalist to travel to every stop of these historic tours as an invited member of the Beatles official press party. He does a great job of bringing the events to life via words, pictures, and even a CD which accompanies the book...filled with an hour of his historic interviews with the Beatles on those tours.
For our purposes, I now quote directly from pages 268-269; Kane is bringing the reader up-to-speed with his contemporary, final contacts with each of the guys:
"...my recent contacts with London have been minimal, except that I sent some packages of video and tapes as a courtesy to Paul, who is an avid collector of anything Beatles. Paul and I have had no direct contact, however, since the band split, *AND HE HAS TURNED DOWN MY OFFERS TO INTERVIEW HIM ABOUT HIS MEMORIES OF THE BAND'S TOURING ERA."
*emphasis mine.
Now, the clues here are twofold. The man we know as FAUL "avidly" amasses and collects "anything" Beatles. For FAUL's purposes, collecting it is the same as controlling it, and in the case of very rare items, that entails TAKING THE ITEMS OFF THE MARKET AND SUBSEQUENT PUBLIC ACCESS.
Also, Faul probably has to have these films and audio, to study what Paul was up to and doing in those golden years. Since this deals with an era of media saturation in which FAUL was not present, one can quickly imagine the discomfort of FAUL.
Secondly, and most important, we see that FAUL repeatedly DENIES interviews to a respected journalist who traveled for months with The Beatles, and got to know them personally, on a first-name basis. Larry Kane would have been able to say, "remember that night in Cleveland? Boy, that was a great after-concert party in the band's suite!" And FAUL wouldn't have know what the hell he was talking about.
The obvious point is, FAUL denies this guy interviews repeatedly because the journalist wants to cover THE TOURING ERA. Therefore Kane could so easily trip-up FAUL but also EXPOSE THE IMPOSTER AND COVER-UP when Kane suddenly realizes that Faul is not PAUL.
Since when has "Paul McCartney," noted and notorious media sponge, EVER clamped down and denied access, denied contact, denied cooperation to further his own publicity and name/product recognition?
Excellent points to ponder, and if possible you all should check this book out because it really does put the reader IN the band 24/7 for the most historic Rock tours ever.
