I don't know if you've had the chance to listen to the Beatles Christmas Records. Well, if you do, you'll see that the ones from the years 63, 64 and 65 are quite "standard". The Beatles speak one by one, thanking the fans for buying their records and so (The one from 1964 is really funny, John is great there).
Well, comes 1966 and what happens? Their Christmas record is not a "standard" message (And won't be anymore), but a kind of funny and strange story with the Beatles playing small characters with funny voices. The natural voice of Paul (nor Faul's) can't be heard at any time during the record, as if he still wasn't good enough in his imitation.
The fact that they use the word "pantomime" for the tittle it's quite significant for me too, since they're probably admitting that from that moment on they're just playing a pantomime with the fans.

Either that...or they were all just on drugs.
