I know this is subjective , but does anyone honestly believe James Paul would have allowed his fans , who were of very tender age , to endure the anguish that many of them felt at the possibility of his death ? Seems to me that our James Paul would have become most anxious to clear this whole thing up lest there be suicides by 14 year old girls . Would he have peeked around a door and mumbled a mark Twain quote and scampered back into hiding , thereafter pretending to be unaware of the question ?

And he threw a bucket of water on a reporter I think. I noticed, although the incident is well known, no mention of it in the Beatles timelines I've seen online. That's not to say it's not mentioned somewhere though.
From The World Tonight...
...I saw you hiding from a flock of paparazzi You were hoping, you were hoping that the ground would swallow you I saw you hiding there...

I think that was a low point for Faul... while the rumors that had started in the U.S. were intended as a hoax (or a disinformation campaign), they were actually closer to the truth than anyone could have imagined at the time. I'd think that Billy would be worried that it was only a matter of time at that point before the jig was up. Fortunately for him, there was no Internet at that point, it was difficult to compare photographs, and he managed to convince everyone that "Paul is dead" was just a silly rumor.

The rumors started because fans started decoding the clues left by Lennon et al. The disinfo came in after that, with the "William Campbell" stories and whatnot.

All that plus the fact the Beatles fans were all so young ! There were no older and cynical 45 and 50 year old Beatles fans . I was 13 when James Paul died . They submerged under the facial hair . When the rumor broke it had been 3 years . 3 years is a LONG , LONG time when you are that age .
