You may be right, but note that Paul didn't make this statement in response to a question about what he would do if The Beatles lost their popularity.

I want him to not be dead! i have to say i do too, i read somewhere that someone saw a guy who looked like Paul up in the Hebredies in Scotland, but its probably just hearsay. I personally think there's a posibility that he's not dead, but then why the Paul Is Dead references? tricky indeed

I want him to not be dead either.... but he is. There are lots of alternate theories, but I don't think Paul being dead is a smokescreen within a smokescreen.
Imagine if he wasn't though... what if during Faul's eventual farewell concert, he had the real James Paul step out on stage at the end, and after explaining the ruse to the stunned crowed, they'd perform the ultimate duet together. Hah, I can dream, can't I?
