Forgive me if this has been discussed before, but I thought I'd post the rough lyrics to John's song "Sally and Billy," which he wrote around 1976 after he decided to retire from active songwriting.
Sally was proud 'cause she ran with the crowd
Independent and beautiful, oh how beautiful
Spent all her days la la la la la la
Drinking coffee and reading plays, oh how beautiful
Oh, now Sally, Sally now don't you cry
Oh how she cried, wipin' the tears from her eyes
Heart runnin' dry - she's never
Feeling some man in the scenes with the band
On the road to a one night stand, oh what a man!
Band's on his time playing games with his mind
Chasin' women and drinkin' wine, helluva lucky guy
Oh now Billy, Billy why do you cry?
Oh, how he cried, wipin' the tears from his eyes
Heart runnin' dry - he's never satisfied
Too late now
To make it up somehow
Too late now
They missed the boat somehow
Sally and Bill, they are over the hill
Niether one of them understands,
I guess they never will!
Both of them dreamin' of what might've been
Pray to Jesus something something something
All day(?) long
Too late now to make it up somehow
Too late now they missed the boat somehow
Billy and Sally both cry
Billy and Sally both cry
Billy and Sally both cry
Note that where it says "la la la la la la" and "something something something" the lyrics aren't clear.
Well, we all know who Billy is, but who is Sally? Linda? Is this song about the two of them causing each other pain by their constant fooling around? Also, several lines here remind me of Bill or Bill's personality (or to be fair to Faul, the way John saw him). Here's two that lept out at me...
Band's on his time playing games with his mind
The boys used to play games with Bill's mind, but he didn't know, because he was just a fool.
Sally and Bill, they are over the hill
"I told you about the Fool on the Hill, I tell you man he living there still..."
What do you think?
