I wrote this in honor of JPM's 65th birthday. It's loaded with references, some easy, some deep. If you like lyrics with hidden and double meanings this will be fun. If not, skip this thread because you'll be bored.
A TWISTED TALE IN THEBES
Remember when your hand first reached
For love and coral and the beach
When port was lodged into your mind
By smoke and flames in sixty-five
And I'm down on the ground?
So very nearly near you came to me (mmmmmm)
And you played twice as long and loud as I could see (mmmmmm)
Memories of bombs and blasts
Then when you found me home at last
You spun for me a twisted tale in Thebes
I need to laugh, she whispered low
A secret, do you want to know
The fables writ for Khephri's eye
Of tables turned and scarabs wry
Set in a penguin's bind?
She said My fairest Pablo's dead
But surely you just lost your head
Come nineteen fifty seventeen
Six holes hacked in your K13
Had let in too much rain
The corny angle of your hands
Beat into stripes from rubber bands
By murky rich men, ten past nine
Their laurels stand the English line
Why is he blessing you?
Paint bully drumming like a dog
His cola tragic in the fog
One Pago ought to understand
A trap that cracks up Neverland
And 1939
So very nearly near you came to me (mmmmmm)
And you played twice as long and loud as I could see (mmmmmm)
Memories of bombs and blasts
Then when you found me home at last
You spun for me a twisted tale in Thebes
That book of magic up your sleeve
Says aye, you was when you was me
Some chumley egg we wouldn't know
Or want to from so far below
What does he really see?
His monogram sewn blue to keep
The Tao from longing off to sleep
He speaks without a word in flight
A single cent to steer him right
Still he's got all he needs
Watch Mary's children out to play
(Except for missing Saturday)
Those mice run blind before her knife
The ends they meet they meet in life
And flip the inner side
While Janus strains to hold the tracks
Of revolution on his back
His heart and shoulder moved with sin
But knowing not, (it's only him)
Refrains to make it be
So very nearly near you came to me (mmmmmm)
And you played twice as long and loud as I could see (mmmmmm)
Memories of bombs and blasts
Then when you found me home at last
You spun for me a twisted tale in Thebes
That boy of nature said to me
I was a rock but now I bleed
And all I got to help my head
Was samhill set beside my bed
And so I came down fast
What will I will I will I hear
If blackwash covers up my ears?
And did the D.M.J. cafe
Serve crow for whitebird yesterday
With bee and weak knee pie?
The sun she weighs down heavy, heavy on this rolling soldier
Because he sees, he sees his monarch's dreams are growing golder
His march falls out of step, not time
And in the end gets back to rhyme
The sum of all his love, his love he takes it makes it bolder
Can mother's wisest words undo
The red that halos only you?
And can you dig poetically
A feeling you got through to me
Before it all unwound?
The two of you on separate ways
A pyre of honey, matches, flames
As Janus waits back home afraid
Forgets the gets for which he's made
Well has she let them down?
So very nearly near you came to me (mmmmmm)
And you played twice as long and loud as I could see (mmmmmm)
Memories of bombs and blasts
Then when you found me home at last
You spun for me a twisted tale in Thebes
Remember when your hand first reached
For love and coral and the beach?
In Khephri's town of peace the light
Rolled less than fourteen hundred nights
I didn't cadge your name
