I like Wings too. There were no disposable diapers (for kids) or disposable incontinence pads for adults in 1965. The first disposables (developped by Proctor & Gamble) came around only by the end of the 60's. Disposable briefs for adults came even later, around 1974 or so. So if there would be any diaper sticking to Paul's butt in the Help! movie (which is of course not the case!) it would have been a reusable cloth diaper. I think there were none for the general public but there could have been some custom made .

Why would they bother? The concept of using these materials was hardly considered, and everyone thought the cloth diaper to be the evident thing. But if Paul would have had such a problem, (which he didn't!) an anal tampon would have been a much better, safer and more discreet solution, instead of a bulky, perhaps leaky diaper, and any doctor back then would have advised him this.

i read or heard somewhere that they went to the bahamas to shoot this scene, and it was freezing cold, so maybe it's just another pair of pants... Just another freezing cold day in the Bahamas. Yep!

...an anal tampon would have been a much better, safer and more discreet solution... you have absolutley no idea what you're talking about. And apparently no concept of the true nature of these illnesses (IBS/crohn's/colitis)...it's not like "the day after bad mexican food"

Not that I'm questioning your sexuality, vandi, but it seems rather possible the man was rather less sanguine about wearing a butt plug all day than you seem to be.
Hope this helps.

First, let me point out that I never mentioned the word "but plug" and that you are the first here to make this allusion referring to sexuality.
Like all tampons, anal tampons are made out of soft material, adapt ergonomically to one's body shape, and so this has little in common with the concept of a 'butt plug'.
And anyway, this was just another hypothesis, no need to question my sexuality, this has got nothing to do with this subject.
I admit, I do know little about IBS, (probably just as litlle as most of us here, exepting one or two) but if it can be compared with Crohn's disease, and if Paul would have suffered that much, why didn't his doctors advise him to undergo an operation to bypass his 'natural' outlet and get him equipped with a stoma. (I don't know if the term Stoma is the correct term in English, it means the patient undergoes surgery whereby the anus is bypassed, by making a small hole in the patients body where a special bag system is fitted to collect the faeces). For a lot of Crohn and IBS patients, this seems to be the most humane and confortable solution.

I'm not sure how prevalent this type of operation was in the mid-60's. But today, it is very "iffy". It involves two major surgeries, and if it is successful, the patient can still experience over a dozen bowel movements per day. For some people, yet, it is successful. Others end up worse than before the surgery, and there is no way to predict the outcome. I didn't mean to sound harsh about the anal tampon, but in a severe case (without becoming graphic) it would be an impossibility.

xpt626: I wasn't reffering to you in the first part of my post, but to others here who's tone towards me was uhm..let's call it "less polite".
You do have a point there. Althoug I know 2 persons who live quite happily with the described medical solution, it is of qourse a very individual thing, and indeed, this is now, and that was then...
I was just exploring another possibility in this story.
But I repeat: I still can't simply "believe" Paul had IBS before I have seen more solid evidence than just this one e-mail from this David Wilmont, M.D. (see the FAQ)

xpt626: I wasn't reffering to you in the first part of my post... MrVanderbuilt, in re-reading my (earlier) reply, it just sounded really abrupt, and I wanted to apologize if it sounded like I was being "short" with you.

No problem, apologies accepted, it's nice to see some people can still disagree on certain things and still get along here

And my apologies too, MrVanderbuilt, if I seem a little paranoid from time to time. We really have had some problems with people deliberately trying to screw with our minds or distracting us with no real intention of arguing the case.

From what I've read about this in the "off topic" section, I can understand this problem, and therefore your reaction. I truly appreciate this little gesture, thanx

Haha you have to admit (not being mean to Paul or anything) that the diaper picture is kinda funny.....whatever it is his arse is definitely well cushioned!

Just another freezing cold day in the Bahamas. Yep! Actually if you'd researched this a little more you would see that it was very cold when they were in the bahamas- they'd originally scripted it in to the film because they all wanted a beach holiday however when they got there the whether was not as they had hoped.

Although i do have an open mind on such matters i don't really buy in to this theory that Paul was so ill. It seems all we have to go on are several dubious at best clues that point in this general direction. This sort of thing would be widely known if it were true. Think how many people would have been working on the Help set or even the set of Hard Days Night. Are you saying that each one of these crew members would have been sworn to secrecy about Paul's problem?
On the contrary i think this would pretty much be public information if he did have this advanced case of IBS. I am open to more evidence though so any thoughts on the matter or what i've said would be much appreciated.

On the contrary i think this would pretty much be public information if he did have this advanced case of IBS. WRONG....I have one of the illnesses, and have been hospitalized several times with the complications. I recently had to leave a career in the media I'd had for twenty years, due to the severity of my illness, and the people I worked with knew nothing about my condition. Matter of fact, one co-worker opined that I was a drunk because I was seen drinking Pedialyte regularly

Ok i appreciate what you are saying however if you can deduce that paul suffered from this condition purely from photographical evidence, surely it would be more obvious to those who were there at the time. The diaper thing- if we can "see it" in one screenshot of help then surely people on the set at the time. I presume people dont know about your condition because you dont go around wearing a massive obvious diaper all day. I have no reason to believe Paul would either.

low budget movie sets have those "porta potty" things, then there's those expensive trailers used by the big budget producers SOME of which have "incinerating toilets" inside. so paul wearing a diaper on the movie set simply makes no sense when he'd be less than 5 minutes away from a commode at all times.... SO PAUL WOULD CHANGE HIS OWN DIAPERS ON THE MOVIE SET ??!!
only XPT626 knows what her illness is like but i still do not believe that paul had to wear diapers because of IBS. i look forward to taking that back- just provide the proof.
60IF says he died of a spasm...could that be a mis-translation of "seizure", i wonder?

.... i still do not believe that paul had to wear diapers because of IBS..... adult disposable diapers were not available to the public in the 60's...I honestly don't know if that is some type of diaper in the photo; but he still could have been very ill.

Yes he could have been ill but to me all this seems very dubious. Don't see any hard evidence and so i am inclined to believe he was probably perfectly healthy. Present me with some hard evidence though and i may see it differently.

Present me with some hard evidence though and i may see it differently. with all due respect, yellowmatter, we are trying to reconstruct events of 40 years ago. In this day and age, everything is known (and repeated) by the media, friends, family, colleagues, etc., including subjects that would not have been touched in the 1960's. (For example, Jim Carrey talking about his father) You have to think in terms of the time these events occurred...and no one would have been foolish enough to leave evidence carved in stone of Paul's illness / kidnapping / death (however many may apply) or of the replacement....

And with all due respect also, the fact that there is a lack of evidence with regards to Paul's "illness" does not necessarily mean that it has been "covered up".
You must consider that the lack of evidence could be due to the fact that he was simply not ill. Becoming convinced of a fact based on a few sketchy "clues" seems a dangerous path to go down in my opinion.

Look im not trying to cause trouble so dont please dont kick me off!
I just believe that one should debate a large issue like this. I like to question things that i'm not sure of.
And besides, surely this is a place for debating, for coming up with new ideas.
I want to see what responses everyone gives to, in my opinion, valid questions.
