A while ago, I downloaded the whole Sgt. Pepper album in mono (with the "uncensored" reprise ), and heard She's Leaving Home, and thought it was a beutiful song. Then, I heard the more common version on normal Sgt. Pepper, and I was taken in shock by what they did to the song! They just destroyed the song by slowing it down so JPM's beutiful voice sounds like it's coming from a giant or something! Just saying...

Yeah it is different, RRD is correct. Any reason it can't be an mp3 file Cavendish? I have it, but RRD wants to help out, so I'll wait..

I have a version of She's Leaving home that sounds better than the and much higher than the normal one. I think they made it sound slower so that it could match up Faul's voice more...

Wow. Thank you for posting that. He doesn't sound like he has a stomach ache in that version! I hear the "I'll Follow the Sun" and the "Yesterday" timbre......

I think they made it sound slower so that it could match up Faul's voice more... strange, i feel the exact opposite. that this mono-version is the pitched-up version from the original to get a better match with faul's voice. but maybe that's because i'm used to the stereo (vinyl) version. still i find the "slow version" to sound more natural.

well if the normal has the reprise "censored" and the mono not, it's common sense that the normal would be altered and the mono not.

you're right, that seems logical. but faul's voice has an overall higher pitch than jp's. so in that respect it's not logical to slow down a song to try to match a typically higher voice.

I would agree that the stereo release is JP slowed down a tad. It doesn't make much sense because we all know fauls voice is higher pitched, yet during the making of pepper Faul was only one of the impersonators. When I'm 64 is JP way sped up(almost ridiculously) So I think JL and camp decided to just try to confuse the issue surrounding JP's voice on sgt. pepper.
Everything else about sgt. pepper seems to be trying to confuse things the cover stereo mix The new haircuts the lost image Pauls mustache new sound studio trickery etc. etc.

I think that it was slowed down so that it would sound like it's coming from a bigger person, as we all know Billy is When I first heard the slower version, I thought it was coming from some giant or something!!!

Excellent thread! She's Leaving Home is definitely speed adjusted down on the normal release. Why? Probably to confuse the issue and make Paul's voice a moving target, harder to get a bead on , so to speak. When I'm 64 is sped up on the regular release as is Lovely Rita, as Delta has already pointed out in another thread. IMO Getting better is regular speed JPM. Fixing a Hole is Denny Laine IMO . Do yourself a favor and download Audacity. It's ridiculously easy to use and very powerful. Just load up a sound file ,mp3 or wave etc. and then select all in the edit menu(or just press ctrl-a) choose effect then speed change and adjust the speed with the slider. They seem to have limited their adjustments to between 4% and 7% either up or down depending on the song and the tone they were after. Personally I can't stand the officially released versions because they are wrong and disguise JPM's true tone and cause great confusion. As I hear it, using Audacity: She's Leaving Home needs a speed up of 4.2% Lovely Rita need a slow down of 5% When I'm 64 need a slow down of 5% Then we hear JPM's true tone. IMO Build your own Pepper!

I've already got Audacity, and I've had it for a long time, and its fun. You can do the OOPS effect on it and everything! And it's free! Please, everybody, get it!
Does anyone know how to put songs from iTunes (on a mac) into Audacity? I know how to convert them to mp3's, but maybe there's an easier way.

But, tell me, in the double tracking on the bridges ("Silly people standing there, etc. never get past my door.....)--listen again. I feel that I hear William tracked in there as well--I especially hear him on the high sustained word "door"--I may be wrong. In similar fashion---perhaps billy and Paul are in duet in the double tracking of "Your Mother Should Know"......that's my reaction to it.........your thoughts? Thanks for the info about audacity.

I know how to convert them to mp3's, but maybe there's an easier way. assuming you are using aac (m4a)-files, you can try to convert them to files audacity can open, like aiff. you can use quicktime player to do this, but perhaps only the pro-version is capable of exporting to other formats. good luck!
