British actor, Jude Law, is to star in a film about Brian Epstein - the man who discovered, managed and promoted The Beatles to worldwide fame before dying at the peak of their success aged only 32. Law, star of "The Talented Mr Ripley" and "Enemy at the Gate" has spent five years researching Epstein's troubled life story and is also helping to write the screenplay for the film. Epstein dropped out of RADA (Royal Academy of the Dramatic Arts) to run a record department within his family's furniture business in Liverpool. After hearing The Beatles at The Cavern Club, he became their manager, sacked Pete Best as drummer to make way for Ringo Starr, urged professionalism, signed the band to EMI and watched them become an international success. This will be the first film devoted to the life of Epstein - the man often referred to as 'the fifth Beatle'. (Source: The Sunday Times, March 16 2003. www.beatlesagain.com/bbrian.html)
Actually and truly correct in all your statements, Lucy. The "unknown" Beatle is perhaps, for me, a better term. I had to hand it to Brian, being totally innocent of the workings of the business then...but he was the one who spotted them, dressed them (to the tune of multiple thousands of dollars) supplied them with all manner of professional support and pumped a bundle into them.. Brian you were ahead of your time!

Actually...Brian was just behind the granddaddy of them all, Colonel Tom Parker. In the earlier era, I had been privy to some of the Elvis camp and had come away with one solid look at the whole thing...that Parker was the brains, full force, behind the whole thing, that Elvis had nothing when it came to management and had even tried to make records under another name, just to beat Parker at least once (the record was "Rockin' Little Angel" made in the UK under the name Ray Smith.) Brian was another of the very few who had that sort of "touch" that made the act. Parker even took on Rick Nelson and made Rick HUGE again even for a short time. Epstein was remarkable in that and I hope he knew he had something nearly no one else had.
