While analyzing Clapton's voice from songs by Derek and The Dominoes to his solo work from the mid-70's on up to today you can really hear the difference differences. Compare songs like Layla to Forever Man and Bell Bottom Blues to Promises. There are many more to compare. The difference is there, though.
Be careful and don't make the mistake I did, of comparing Cream songs with Clapton's solo work. I heard Sunshine of Your Love and thought "He sounds like a totally different person." And he should of course, because it was Jack Bruce singing!

Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton both sing on Sunshine Of Your Love.
I think its still Eric (not Feric) on both "Sunshine" and "Layla", so you were kinda right Plastic Paul. The vocals break down like this: Sunshine Of Your Love
Jack It's getting near dawn, When lights close their tired eyes.
Eric I'll soon be with you my love, To give you my dawn surprise.
Jack I'll be with you darling soon, I'll be with you when the stars start falling.
Jack I've been waiting so long
Jack and Eric To be where I'm going In the sunshine of your love.
Jack I'm with you my love, The light's shining through on you.
Eric Yes, I'm with you my love, It's the morning and just we two.
Jack I'll stay with you darling now, I'll stay with you till my sea's all dried up.
Jack I've been waiting so long
Jack and Eric To be where I'm going In the sunshine of your love.

The opening line is all it took for me to hear the difference. I didn't know Clapton sang those verses. Interesting but I still think it's a different voice than the modern Clapton.

But layla and sunshine of your love were released years ago, neither a "modern clapton"

But layla and sunshine of your love were released years ago, neither a "modern clapton" No, No. What I mean is that the voice on Layla sounds different than the voice on the modern day Clapton songs. And the change seems to have taken place some time in the early to mid 70's.

I have a lot of respect for Clapton, esp. since I realised the Blind Faith, Delaney, Bonnie & "friends" connection. It's a true artist that puts his individual creativity ( & friends,) before fame & fortune, & tells the nasties where to shove it.. No wonder they HATED him & Harrison together, what a kick in the knackers that must have been..
