It is true or Ringo was joking? RINGO 1968 (about the song 'Lady Madonna') RINGO: "It sounds like Elvis, doesn't it? No, it doesn't sound like Elvis... it IS Elvis . Even those bits where he goes very high." What do you think about Ringo's words?

I mentioned this before--that even at the time that this song came out people thought the voice was odd--it was a strange song. McCartney was obliged to comment that he was using the 'Elvis' voice that he had developed and often used with the band when they were doing clubs in Germany. I found it interesting that enough people found the voice odd enough that he was obliged to comment upon it at the time. I also it find it strange that prior to the Beatles breakup the songs were said to be a collaborative effort, Lennon and McCarntey almost being each other's editor and muse. But after the break up songs started to be attributed to this one or that one or appropriated by this one or that one and Ringo singing became Paul and so on.

It's obvious that it's an strange voice indeed, but Faul knew how to sing with different voices. Look at "Let it be" for instance to see him singing like two or three different people, including a funny tenor voice in "Besame Mucho". In this case, it's a kind of Elvis impersonation, that's all.

Would you belive that Eddie Addison (remember him) told us in a post that Elvis was the singer on that song and it was heavily disguised with electronic distortion etc.

So Elvis sung "You Never Give Me Your Money" too? ;D ;D ;D
"Out of college, money spent See no future, pay no rent All the money's gone, nowhere to go Any jobber got the sack Monday morning, turning back Yellow lorry slow, nowhere to go But oh, that magic feeling, nowhere to go Oh, that magic feeling Nowhere to go"

I stripped down the "Lady Madonna" track, removing the apparent distortion on the voice, and sure enough, it does sound like Elvis. So much like him that I think an Uberkinder voice comparison is in order.

This Elvisesque voice turns up again on "Abbey Road". I have to get the CD form the car (been listening a couple days) is it "You Never Give Me Your Money"? I'll double check---anyone remember?

Just going by natural hearing capacity, the voice for "Lady Madonna" and "You Never Give Me Your Money" does sound like Ringo but...

except, for my ears at least, the (forgive me Ringo) the pitch is less, uh, variable. and the accent seems far less Scouse or NW Brit or whatever it is called. Except the word, "creeping like a nun" almost sounds like "noon" to my american ears. The american "schwah" sound, the unspecific "uh" seems less common in the Beatles accents...............I will say, Ringo had the heaviest, or "butchest" timbre of the group, manliest, whatever. With all due love for the Beatles music, occassionaly, when John, Paul, and George would sing high, loud three note chords on the early dance music, I almost hear Alvin and the Chipmunks. Brite brite, brite, 'specially when George and John were voiced on top and singing loud. Paul's voice had a more dulcet sonority, almost slightly muted or covered, in a real smooth way. So, (as I drone on and on) Ringo sound does , it would seem, MATCH the darkness of the Elvis imitation. Elvis sang covered and dark, especially on the ballads and religious or patriotic tunes. Eleanor Rigby has a manufactured dark, artificially heavy quality to it. I think muscleing the voice in that way would have made Bill hoarse. But I give up. Mysteries mysteries. I am sleepy.... gotta crash.............................

So much like him that I think an Uberkinder voice comparison is in order. OK...now go one more investigative step; slow down the speed/pitch 3 to 5% or so...tweak it, so to speak for the vocal on lady madonna of WHOMEVER is singing it, has been SPED-UP slightly in pitch. I can tell; I do it myself for my own tunes. The Beatles were famous for doing this; remember the 'Rarities' album, with Ringo's 'Don't Pass Me By' on it? The version on there was of a weirdly-too-fast pitch control on the vocal...... TRY the slowing down of the pitch/speed a tad bit...and THEN tell us if it sounds TOTALLY like Elvis the Pelvis.

I always thought it sounded like Ringo. Silly me! Don't feel bad ! I was confused about who sung what . Only now I know WHY ! I attributed ( blamed ) the post -Beatles " Smile Away" on Ringo , only to learn last month it was the fake Paul.

I was really just trying to sound ironic when I said Lady Madonna sounded like Ringo - because it was apparently Ringo (according the the first post) who said it sounded like Elvis.

It was probably Ringo who sung and he was having us on - "hey yeah man, it was Elvis!", just a joke I think.

Just going by natural hearing capacity, the voice for "Lady Madonna" and "You Never Give Me Your Money" does sound like Ringo but... i know it sounds a bit like Elvis, but i went to see macca (or whoever has become macca, whatever) at the NIA in Birmingham this year and he rocked, but more importantly he sang those songs exactly how they sound on the LP's. yesterday, lady madonna, we can work it out etc. now i know these can be reproduced using technology but i know that only macca singing yesterday can get the hairs on the back of my neck standing up. and it did that night!.
