Most of us know that John and George were barely on speaking terms for a great part of the 1970's. John even admitted to May Pang(it's in her book I think)that he had not worked out all the issues he had with George. One instance George confronted John backstage after a concert and they had an argument and George ripped off John's glasses. Things were not well between the two. George barely mentioned John in his book IMeMine and I think that hurt John.
I would like to offer a possible explanation for the riff between the two Beatles. Well besides the obvious power struggle after Paul died, what could it be? I am sure George wanted more say in the music since he was writing good songs by the time Paul died but that is not the reason I think.
I think it was because the competition over who had the more special relationship with Paul. Both have a good case. John maybe slightly more so but Paul was supposedly George's best friend. George and Paul were the only Beatles to have been friends before the Beatles were anything. They did many things together as youngsters. Paul was George's best man at his wedding and when they stayed in hotel rooms on tour, it was George and Paul in one room and Ringo and John in the other. Paul and George were tight.
We all the close relationship that Paul and John had. They were together a lot and what can be more intimate than writing songs together? They had a very special relationship, one like no other.
So John and George both suffered after Paul's death and I think maybe George felt loneliness through John's suffering. He felt a huge loss after Paul's death and might have been overwhelmed by John's obsession with leaving clues, etc. I think he felt overwhelmed by John's misery and obsession and maybe left out. Afterall, he too lost his best friend.
This may sound totally crazy but it's a thought that's been in my head awhile.
