Where I work we have that wonderful satelite muzak coming over our PA system... one day I hear three McCartney tunes in a row.. cant recall them but I know the first was definitely a Macca tune, the second not so sure and 3rd was followed by another Paul/Faul tune... the second song I wasnt sure of and thought Id heard it before but couldnt make out all of the words.. it was kind of catchy and sounded like McCartneys work. Well, I did find out (after a week of listening and websurfing) the artist and song which is XTC's- "Id Like That" and it featured in the movie "Me Myself and Irene" ...just to start a test to see if it is possible to fool a great ear (Perplexed I know you have a good one) has anyone heard of this song? I know Ive read a bit about Klaatu and some of their songs but I have yet to hear Paul in any of it as its claimed, "A voice print test on Klaatu- and McCartney recordings said to have been made by the University of Miami proved that the lead vocalist was the same." Well, just starting a new thread and testing out ears to see if this group XTC has any connection. It was just weird when I heard three songs and three simliar voices and could account to knowing two song titles out of the three.

Well, actually, just a little background as far as my thoughts on Klaatu and so forth. Klaatu's stuff is great, just got introduced to the two better known records and they were wonderful musicians. There are really only TWO instances, to me, though, where I hear overlap. The single vocal riff in the California Jam song, near the 2 minute point someone hollars out "California." in a rock and roll wail that took my aural memory straight to James Pauls's version of "Kansas City." A vocal resemblance so close I had a chill. It sounds likes its Paul to me. I have no possible explanation for that, other than maybe it is, and it was dubbed in posthumously, or ELSE JP lived and snuck his voice in there. Why though...? Or, its just a darn good imitator.
Also, Sub Rosa Subway, the vocals strongly resemble the vocals on "Hello, Goodbye." Again, a mystery as to how and why. Of course, I don't think Hello Goodbye sounds like James Paul. At all. If he's in the mix, he's buried and pitch shifted. you know the lead vocals on Hello Goodbye are double tracked and mixed kinda under. Very produced song.........
I'll try to get XTC's "Id Like That" or the movie soudtrack and listen.
I have to listen for a while-----I may have a lame reaction to it. We'll see.............meanwhile, anyone else?................

Perplexed, If you cant seem to find the movie to listen to it, its also on XTC's album called "Apple Venus 1"....coincidental perhaps? You can listen to a partial 15 second clip on amazon.com when you look up this title of the album if that will help, but listening to the full song would probably be best. But most of all, it was strange that this song appears on the satelite tracks as being in the middle of two known (Faul) Macca songs.

Skydelli & Perplexed. I have it from a very good source that Faul did backup vocals for Klaatu. I will look up that XTC song & see what I think. I don't believe in coincidence.

Okay, I made a mistake about it being on the Me Myself and Irene soundtrack as it is not listed, although I could swear it couldve been in the movie itself. I did hear this song somewhere before I found it on line after hearing it at work. Its best getting the album "Apple Venus part1" and listening. I did find out at the official XTC site that this album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios (Studio One), London, England, April 1998... www.xtcidearecords.co.uk/discs/discs_1.htm

Not a problem Perplexed, I appreciate your opinion and I feel yours is the only opinion I'll accept as you are the one with the great ears! I assure you that you WILL NOT receive a 'lame' reaction when you hear this song in its entirety. It reminds me of another song that is common with Faul/Bill's song arrangements but cant put my finger on it... As Elidor pointed out in an earlier post that XTC's songwriters at one point had the third most valuable publishing rights in Britain behind the Beatles and the Kinks, I feel there is a connection somehwere but not sure why? I know it is common for musicians to stand in or play/sing a song for other musicians, but why Faul and XTC? Why were they so important? Is it really Faul/Bill or one out of the group XTC that has a very similar voice as Faul/Bill? How common is that? Is the only connection we have is that the album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios (not to mention the album name: Apple Venus 1)? What was going on in 1998? Too many questions to think about....

Just bumping this thread again...still waiting for anyone to give an opinion.. yikes! Skydeli, oops! I forgot. I have been to Tower several times to score a slew of other CD's for projects etc I have coming (research and tune-lifting in some cases) and I will remind myself to nab the XTC CD next time!! Oops! I really want to hear it, after all that's been mentioned.......

I just went and listened to the snippet and would have sworn it was Faul. We need a voice comparison between this voice and Faul's. Bet it would be right on.

I just sent the song to Sun King and he is going to try and include it on this site some how for everyone to hear it. Lets hope it works out. I have a feeling no one will be disappointed.
Lyrics:
I'd like That if we could cycle down some lane I'd like that if we could ride into the rain No macs, getting wet I'd be your Albert if you'd be Victoria, hah hah We'd laugh because each drop would make me grow up Really high, really high like a really high thing Say, a sunflower
I'd like that
I'd like that (What would you like?) if we could lay before my fire I'd like that (What would you like?) if you could slide me from this wire Toasting fork, I'll be done I wouldn't hector if you'd be Helen of Troy, oh boy We'd laugh because each flame would make me grow up Really high, really high like a really high thing Say, a sunflower
I'd Like that
I'd smile so much my face would crack in two And you could fix it with your kissing glue I'd like that Yes, I'd like that
I'd like that (what would you like?) if we could float away in bed I'd like that (what would you like?) if I could row your heart and head With you laid on one arm I'd be your Nelson if you'd be my Hamilton, what fun We'd laugh because each stroke would make me grow up Really high, really high like a really high thing Say, a sunflower (repeats)
Say a sunflower I became I'd be growing in your lane

Well, I wentto Border's and all they had of XTC was "Black Sea." I bought it. I am listening to it now. I like the first cut. Sounds good. Good band--good sonic quality. Anyway, I will continue to look for Apple-Venus. I cant get that song to play on real player either. Oh well.

It works in Windows Media Player. Tried it. Thanks for the input PaulBearer! I appreciate it. Its just when I first heard this over work muzac radio (lol) that it was in between two other Macca tunes. The voice is similar. Very much so that it tweaks my ear at particular points of the song of the singers pronounciation (represent in printed characters of the spoken counterpart of certain words) Ive heard many many many times before. Its like when Perplexed was talking about the Paul/Faul pics 'eye to brain' -something is amiss...to 'ear to brain'-- this is similar sounding. Lets not forget the other things about XTC that are eerily coincidental:
1: XTC's songwriters at one point had the third most valuable publishing rights in Britain behind the Beatles and the Kinks
2: The album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios
3: The album name: Apple Venus 1
Questions: Is it really Faul/Bill or one out of the group XTC that has a very similar voice as Faul/Bill?
How common is that?
What was going on in 1998?

fwiw, to me it doesn't sound like faul. i can't explain it in technical terms, but to me it's clearly different.
